CULTURAL AGENCIES

The Arts

Bardavon 1869 Opera House/Hudson Valley Philharmonic - Historic theater in downtown Poughkeepsie. Varied programs: concerts, dance, drama, film, lectures, children's program. Interns can be involved in public relations; graphics; fundraising; stage and technical assistance.

Barrett House - Four positions available at the art agency - administrative assistant to the executive director, gallery assistant, educational outreach assistant and a librarian.

Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center, Inc. - Students interested in the arts would get to work with director on an art gallery, theater program, etc.

DIA: BEACON - Work as a docent at largest contemporary art gallery in the U.S.

Dutchess County Arts Council - Coordinates funding and activities of local arts organizations, promotes the arts.

Highland Cultural Center - This fast growing agency wishes interns in the following areas: marketing, public relations, advertising, arts, music, journalism, computer programming/internet and WWW desktop publishing, theater and education.

Mill Street Loft - Art center that runs programs for children and teens. Special emphasis on encouraging the arts among inner-city youth and how to market their finished products.

Project Aware - Seeking one to three interns for this project based at the Howland Cultural Center in Beacon, which focuses on the empowerment of adolescent girls through the arts. This project deals with gender issues, life skill and self-esteem building activities, and the encouragement of creative development in at-risk girls ages 11-15. Interns will coordinate activities. Times are Monday and Wednesdays 2:30 - 6:00 pm and Saturdays 10:00 - 2:30 pm.

New Day Repertory Co. - This group, which brings drama productions and workshops to area schools, as well as producing six or seven plays a year, needs students to prepare study guides, press releases, and other activities related to productions.

PPYYA - After school program for children from 3:00 - 5:30 pm that utilizes drama as a method to reach inner city at-risk youth. Interns will assist in planning and coordinating activities.

Private Sculptor - Assist sculptor - his works include architectural installations, sculpture, wall pieces, jewelry, paperweights and glassware. The Museum of Modern Art Design store produces glassware that he has designed.

Storm King Art Center, Cornwall - Outdoor sculpture museum with some indoor exhibit space. In the past students have done research on individual artists represented in the collection. One day a week. Car necessary.

Women's Studio Workshop, Rosendale - Assist artists in residence with silk screen printing, papermaking, graphics, etching. Also, student to assist with public relations and grant applications. Car necessary.


Historical and Preservation Agencies

Adriance Memorial Library - Cataloging and research projects available in local History Room.

Beacon Historical Madame Brett Homestead - Help create a wildflower walk at the oldest home in Dutchess County.

Dutchess County Historical Society - Society maintains extensive collections and a library; mounts exhibits; and provides educational tours for school groups focusing on the colonial period. Students can assist with tours and do research on selected topics.

Eleanor Roosevelt's Val-Kill - Research projects relating to Eleanor Roosevelt's career and her life at Val-Kill as well as tourguiding. Human Rights Monitoring Project.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Library - Introduce high school students to the resources of the library by leading tours and preparing materials on historical questions and assisting with newsletter.

Gomez Mill House, Newburgh - Assist with programming, grant writing, research, and public relations for house which is earliest surviving Jewish residence in U.S. and has been continuously inhabited for 275 years.

Hudson River Maritime Museum, Kingston - Research history of Hudson River for exhibits on history of sailing, of ice boating, of river industries, etc. Car necessary although some of the research can be done locally.

Montgomery Place, Red Hook - Historic 19th century estate on the Hudson River. Research, curatorial, marketing projects; development of educational program and tour guiding; horticultural and landscaping projects.

Ogden Mills Mansion - Research and curatorial projects available including research on Mills' family history and objects in the collection.

Olana - Former home of Hudson River School artist Frederic Church, now a museum. Welcomes researchers and curatorial assistants. Car necessary.

Roosevelt - Vanderbilt Estates - Interns can do historical and curatorial research, help with exhibits, edit brochures and other materials, conduct tours, assist in preservation laboratory. Must elect for one unit.

S.F.B. Morse Historic Site - Student to assist with educational and other programs.

Wilderstein - Curator of Victorian mansion, little changed since it was built, offers many curatorial and research projects. Home of FDR's cousin who gave him Fala.
