EDUCATION

Community Centers & Tutoring Programs

Board of Cooperative Educational Services - Tutor adults who read at least the 4th grade level in English, math and other subjects to prepare them to pass the GED (General Education Diploma) exams. Can also assist in ESL classes.

Beulah Baptist Church, Catharine Street Center; Martin Luther King Center-Beacon; New Hope Center; Tubman Terrace Center - These Centers serve inner city children and need tutors for basic skills, aides for arts and crafts workshops, physical fitness, dance and music. After school programs for elementary children are held from 3:30-6:30 and for older children in the evenings.

Climb the Beanstalk - After school reading program for 1st graders in the city of Poughkeepsie. Hours 2:15 - 4:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Nubian Directions - Help benefit middle and high school students in tutoring, educational workshops, PowerPoint and multimedia workshops.

Teen Resource and Activity Center (T.R.A.C.) - Interns are needed to tutor middle to high school students in all subjects. This program will run Monday through Friday approximately 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Youth Resources Development Corporation - Innovative program designed to help high school dropouts become employable. Need tutors (math especially needed) for training in basic skills mornings or afternoons.


Day Care Centers and Early Childhood Education

Astor Early Childhood Programs - 12 hours required - Students are needed to help out in classrooms in the following areas: (1) Head Start Morning Session 8:30-12:00, Afternoon Session 12:30-4:00, (2) Head Start classrooms that are totally inclusive of children both with and without disabilities 8:30 - 1:30, (3) Astor Day Treatment (3-5 years) for children who are emotionally disturbed/disabled.

Special Education Preschool and Evaluation Center: Interns could help with preschool evaluations...scoring and interpreting the tests if they have had proper prerequisites (statistics and course work). Also help out in classroom 8:30-2:00

Adult Education program that is computer based. Mon-Thurs 9:00-12:00 - students are needed to assist with computer training.

Research project - study impact of Head Start or Early Head Start programs.

Early Head Start (0-3 years) - home study program - needs training and acommitment of at least two years in order to work with a family. Assist in nurturing rooms at day care center.

Family Advocates - assist social workers with Head Start families - 3 weeks training needed.

Community Family Development - Services children from single parent households, mostly from minority populations, and includes children from 4 months to 14 years.

Dutchess County Child Care Council - Agency that advocates for day care, oversees licensing of centers and provides information about existing programs.

Jewish Community Center Nursery School; Poughkeepsie Day Nursery - Work as teachers' aides with small groups of children.

Vassar Child Care Co-op -This center cares for infants to 3 years old.


Private and Parochial Schools and Churches (free time during morning school hours is essential)

Holy Trinity School, Lourdes, Millbrook School, Oakwood School, and Poughkeepsie Day School - Tutors, teachers' aides, recreation and crafts assistants needed.


Public Schools (free time during morning school hours is essential)

Arlington, Wappingers, Hyde Park, Spackenkill School Systems - Teacher aides and tutors needed in elementary schools, K-5, mostly in reading and math as well as aides in all subjects at the secondary levels.

City of Poughkeepsie Schools - In addition to serving as teachers' aides in all subjects, students can also work with PACE, a program for gifted children, with the school psychologist, and with the instructor of the ESL program (English as a Second Language).
