Dutchess County Commissioner of Jurors - Intern would help with phone calls, data entry, payroll. Would learn how the process of jury selection works.
Dutchess County Public Defender - Assigned to represent people unable to provide own counsel for hearings, trials, etc. Students must work 12 hours per week. Duties include interviewing at the D.C. Jail, aiding the investigators, and preparing pre-sentence memorandums. Car helpful.
Judges - Internships for students interested in administration of justice. Positions available with two justices, county and family court judges.
Local Attorneys - Students may observe litigation or legal counseling, or participate in research or special projects. Preference to juniors and seniors.
Community Transitions Center - Assist the supervisors of this program who work with youthful offenders on parole helping the clients to find worthwhile employment. Also interns help develop skills for the clients.
Dutchess County Probation - Assist probation officers in all phases of their work: juvenile diversion programs, supervision of adults and juveniles, interviewing of prisoners to determine eligibility for ROR, etc. One year commitment.
Green Haven Correctional Facility:
- Students are needed to teach, discuss and exchange with the prisoners relevant information on the cultural, socioeconomic, psychological, historical and political conditions of the Blacks and Hispanics in society.
-This placement is part of a class so registration is under Africana Stuides 200 instead of Field Work 290.
NYS Attorney General's Office - Spanish-speaking students are needed to assist in this office. Student also can work with state counsel, canvassing regional newspapers to find articles reporting on relevant political or environmental issues, learn how to prepare legal documents and the development of cases. Students also can work with the consumer fraud division. Open to sophomores or juniors - 15 hours per week for 1 year.
Poughkeepsie, City of, and Town of, Police Department: Juvenile Division - Unit runs diversion programs for juveniles at risk of being placed in detention centers as well as aiding truants, runaways, etc. Cases will be assigned to interns who will do short- term counseling and follow-up. One year commitment required.
